Breathing Fire - Demo

Photobucket

Breathing Fire
Demo
Painkiller Records
2004

1. Plant
2. 40 Hours
3. Cease
4. Agent
5. Sequence
6. Mouth
7. Tetra-Grammaton
8. Gates of Ivory
9. Exhale
10. Untitled
11. Deny Everything (Circle Jerks)

I found myself relatively unimpressed with Breathing Fire's full length, Years of Lead, on Painkiller, possibly due to the the shitty vinyl rip i came across. However, their original Demo from 2004 really rips hard. This is powerviolence done right. Imagine Mind Eraser if their only influence was Crossed Out. Im not sure if that makes sense, but you get the point. This is good.

Modern Life is War - Witness

Photobucket

Modern Life is War
Witness
Deathwish Inc.
2005

1. The Outsiders - 3:11
2. Martin Atchet - 2:36
3. John and Jimmy - 1:53
4. Marshalltown 3:48
5. D.E.A.D.R.A.M.O.N.E.S. - 2:20
6. Young Man on a Spree - 1:35
7. I'm Not Ready - 2:53
8. Young Man Blues - 3:10
9. Hair Raising Accounts of Restless Ghosts - 5:34

This is easily one of my favorite hardcore records of all time. Modern Life is War's Witness surpassed the excellency of their first record, My Love My Way, and probably set the bar too high, especially in comparison to their third effort, which i find to be rather disappointing. It's been at least a year and a half since MLIWs breakup, and 4 since the release of this record, and i don't think any hardcore release since then has really come close to being as good (perhaps Cult Ritual's LP) so instead of going on about all the reasons this is great, I'm just going to say download this.

Asunder - A Clarion Call

Asunder
A Clarion Call
Life is Abuse
2004

1. Twilight Amaranthine
2. Crown of Eyes
3. A Clarion Call

Crawling funeral doom featuring Dino form Dystopia. I'm not going to say that this is better than Dystopia, but this is easily one of the best doom records ever written. The songwriting is fantastic, and as depressing as the record is hearing it (especially the last track) puts me in a good mood. I uploaded Asunder's split with Graves at Sea a while back, but that record's really only worth it for the Graves at Sea side. This record is where Asunder truely shines.

this.

I've lost interest in any other music while waiting for this band's LP on Youth Attack to arrive at my house. If you don't who I'm talking about, you probably shouldn't listen to music.

The Holy Mountain/Cobra Noir split

Photobucket

The Holy Mountain/Cobra Noir
No Idea/Alerta Antifascista
2009

The Holy Mountain:
1. Stalker - 2:38
2. Youth Authority - 2:21

Cobra Noir:
3. Hounds of Hell - 5:14

I found this recently released split between Florida's defunct The Holy Mountain and Canada's Cobra Noir staring me in the face on the wall of new records at a record store about an hour from where I live. Being a pretty big fan of the Holy Mountain i decided to pick this up. This is one of the last in a series of split 7-inches that have been coming out since the band's demise, and listening to their side makes me hate myself for never seeing them live. The first track is one of the heaviest HM songs i've ever heard. Thats all you need to know. The second song sounds alot like a Tragedy song, but it's definitly still original enough. I can't make up my mind about Cobra Noir's side of this record. Alot of people seem to be into this band, however I don't quit see where all the hype is coming from. It's got a cool melodic intro, however the rest of the song is just a pretty standard metallic crusty-hardcore song. I'm not saying that it's bad, but it jsut doesn't excite me that much. If anything, download this for the Holy Mountain's side. It's a real winner.

Weakling - Dead As Dreams

Photobucket
Weakling
Dead As Dreams
tUMULt
2000

1. Cut Their Brain and Place Fire Therein - 10:30
2. Dead As Dreams - 20:41
3. This Entire Fucking Battlefield - 14:46
4. No One Can Be Called as a Man While He'll Die - 13:11
5. Disasters in the Sun - 17:05

This is the only release by the obscure west coast black metal band Weakling (which contained members of Asunder and The Fucking Champs) and some consider it to be one of the greatest accomplishments in black metal. Whether or not its that great is up for debate, however i think that this record is a hauntingly well written 70+ minutes of droning prog-BM. The riffs are brilliant and catchy, yet it is also the perfect record to zone out too. With no song under 10 minutes, this record actually requires that you take the time to listen to it, but between the high musicianship and brilliant fucking songwriting, you'll probably be glad that you did.
